Tectonic Plates World Map
Tectonic Plates World Map. This documentary, in the form of a satellite map, attempts to put some real world topography to the Plate Tectonics. According the theory of plate tectonics, Earth's outer shell is made up of a series of plates.
Tectonic plates are gigantic segments or pieces of the Earth's crust and uppermost mantle that together constitute the Lithosphere. Convergent (colliding) boundaries are shown as a black line with teeth, divergent (spreading) boundaries as solid red lines, and transform (sliding alongside) boundaries as solid black lines. There are seven primary tectonic plates in the world, but there are also seven secondary plates and sixty tertiary plates, for a grand total of more than seventy tectonic plates.
Features pertaining to tectonic activity, including earthquake zones, volcanic regions, hotspots and rift valleys, are also shown.
By looking at each you can see a positive correlation between all three.
For several years I have been teaching Plate Tectonics to students and we have done several paper-pencil activities that have to do with plotting earthquakes, volcanos and landforms on maps. This trench delimits the Nazca Plate that goes beneath the South American Plate. From Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository.
